2 Things You Can Do To Help Make Your House Hurricane Resistant

When you are building a home in a hurricane-prone area, you want to know that your house is going to be as resistant as possible to hurricanes. There are some things that you can do that will help with keeping your house hurricane-resistant, such as:

Hurricane Resistant vs. Hurrican Proof

There is not going to be anything that you can do that will make your house 100% hurricane-proof. Hurricanes can be tricky and can get stronger right before they hit land and they can fling all kinds of debris around, as well as a lot of rain, which could cause you to have flooding. What you can do is build a house that is hurricane resistant. Resistant means that it will stand up to as much of what the hurricane is throwing at your house as possible. There are several easy things that you can do while you are building your house in order to make your house resistant.

Reinforce the Structure

One thing you can do is to reinforce your walls. There are a few ways that you can do that. One is that you can have residential steel added into your framing as they are building your house. Metal is stronger than wood is, so can handle more stress than the wood framing can. You may also want to ask the builders to anchor the framing in extra cement as well, to give it extra strength. You can also ask the builder to use metal tie downs when they are working on the roof. Those tie downs will run all the way down the walls from the roof to the foundation. That gives the roof extra strength to help it stay on the walls during the storm.

Metal Doors

Another thing that you can do when you are working to make your new house as hurricane-resistant as possible is to use metal doors instead of wooden doors. Metal doors are going to be able to stand up to flying debris more than a wooden door will. They are also less likely to be blown in when the wind starts howling. For the best protection, you want to make sure that your door doesn't have any windows. Windows may look pretty, but they are a weak spot, and your goal is to get rid of weak spots.

If you live in a hurricane-prone area, you want to make sure that you are as safe as possible. One way to do that is to make sure that you are building a hurricane-resistant house.
